Marble Fountain
A marble fountain is the oldest form of built luxury in the Indian subcontinent — an architectural water feature carved from stone rather than assembled from parts. Mughal emperors made it central to their paradise-garden vocabulary at Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, where tiered marble basins fed the chahar-bagh axes with cascading chadars of water. Rajput craftsmen in Rajasthan adopted the form and added pierced jharokha panels, jaali screens, and lotus-petal detailing. Today the marble fountain still anchors the same spaces where it did five centuries ago — private courtyards and home gardens, hotel and corporate lobbies, spa and wellness centres, temple precincts — and it remains, in Vastu terms, the most powerful way to invite Lakshmi Vaas and continuous prosperous flow into a property.
A fountain is materially unlike a statue: it is simultaneously a load-bearing structure, a decorative carving, and a plumbing system. At PLPS Art Gallery, four generations beginning with Late Pandit Lallu Prasad Sharma — Shilp Guru and Presidential Award recipient (1991) — have carried this composite craft. We work almost exclusively in Makrana marble for fountains because density is not decorative here; it is functional. Softer stones absorb water, weather in monsoon, discolour around spouts, and delaminate at joints within a few years. Makrana — the marble of the Taj Mahal — resists all of this. Every fountain is engineered top-down: Shila Pariksha stone selection, tier-by-tier Rekhankan line-drawing, hidden plumbing channels routed through the central pedestal, submersible pump housing concealed in the ground basin, and hand-polished Chikni finish that seals the surface.
The classical tiered fountain (two or three levels for compact and grand spaces respectively) remains our most-commissioned form. We also build single-basin pedestal fountains for contemporary lobbies, wall-fountains for narrow entrance verandahs, and self-contained tabletop fountains from two feet upward. Spouts are carved as lion-heads (Simha-mukha), lotus (Kamal), elephant (Gaja), Makara water-creatures, or a clean round contemporary opening. Support pillars can carry deity motifs — Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati — and bases can be finished in lotus-petal carving, Rajasthani jharokha panels, floral scroll bands, or Meenakari inlay for luxury commissions.
Our marble fountains range from two-foot tabletop pieces for prayer rooms and console tables to fifteen-foot-plus grand three-tier centrepieces for hotel motor-lobbies and palace-scale gardens. Custom tier configuration, basin diameters, and structural certification are provided for large installations. For a tabletop or prayer-room fountain, two to three feet is ideal — a self-contained recirculating piece that fits on a console or reception counter. Villa foyers, boutique hotel lobbies, and courtyard alcoves take four-to-six-foot two-tier fountains without overwhelming the room. Home courtyards, farmhouse gardens, and banquet lawns look proportional with seven-to-ten-foot three-tier fountains and a substantial ground basin. For hotel motor-lobbies, resort central lawns, corporate campuses, and palace-scale gardens, we build twelve-to-fifteen-foot-plus grand fountains with a finial, three tiers, and a wide catchment pool — engineered for continuous public use.
The north-east corner — the Ishan Kona — is the prescribed zone for any water feature in Vastu; north and east are acceptable secondary placements. Water must flow inward or northward, never outward from the main entrance or towards the south, as southward flow is believed to drain wealth. Avoid the south-east (fire zone), south-west (earth-anchor zone), directly beneath a beam or staircase, and any bedroom. A correctly placed marble fountain is associated with Lakshmi Vaas, continuous prosperity, natural humidification, and the sattvic calm of moving water — the same Ganga-jal symbolism used in classical Mughal gardens.

Plumbing is routed invisibly through the central pedestal so no tubing is visible. Underwater warm-white LED lighting is a popular optional add-on for evening ambience, and full RGB colour-changing systems are available for lobby, spa, and resort installations. Electrical connections are pre-planned into the structural drawings so no drilling of the finished stone is needed on site after installation.
Makrana marble — the stone of the Taj Mahal — is exceptionally dense and low-porosity, and that density is what makes it correct for a fountain rather than merely traditional. Softer marbles (Vietnam White, Italian white varieties) absorb water at the spouts, discolour and stain around the flow-lines, weaken at basin joints, and can delaminate after two or three monsoons in outdoor conditions. Makrana resists all of this, ages to a soft ivory patina rather than a grey stain, and rings faintly when tapped — a genuine density test any buyer can perform. For indoor lobby and tabletop fountains, softer marbles remain acceptable; for outdoor and courtyard use, Makrana is non-negotiable.
Every PLPS fountain is a bespoke commission — no two are identical. You choose the typology (two-tier, three-tier, single-basin pedestal, wall-mounted, or tabletop), the ground-pool diameter, and the height. Drain, brush, and refill the basin every three to four weeks — this is the single most important habit. For mineral scale around spouts, use a soft nylon brush with lukewarm water and mild pH-neutral soap; never use acidic descalers, bleach, or hard steel wool, which will etch and dull the polished Chikni surface. Add a small quantity of aquarium-safe algae-inhibitor if the fountain sits in direct sun. Before monsoon, service the pump, check basin joints, and cover the top-tier finial if heavy hail is expected in your region. Annual re-polishing by a stone specialist keeps the surface sealed and prevents long-term absorption.
Lead time for a custom marble fountain is 60 to 120 days from confirmed drawing sign-off, depending on tier count, height, decorative complexity, and inlay work. A two-foot tabletop piece completes in around 60 days; a two-tier four-to-six-foot lobby fountain typically takes 75 to 90 days; a three-tier eight-to-fifteen-foot courtyard or garden centrepiece with jharokha detailing and gold-leaf accents can require the full 120 days.
