Maa Saraswati — goddess of knowledge, music, arts, and vidya — is Sanatan Dharma's most singularly white deity. From her saree to her lotus seat to her hamsa vahana, her iconography insists on unbroken white, the colour of unblemished intellect. This is why Makrana marble — the same cool white stone as the Taj Mahal — is the only medium that truly honours her form. Peak worship falls on Vasant Panchami, when students, teachers and universities install a fresh murti for the year's learning.
Carving Saraswati is our workshop's most demanding commission. The four veena strings must be released from a single marble block without a hairline crack, each swan feather has to be undercut so light passes cleanly beneath, and the pallu of her white saree must fall in continuous folds. Only Makrana's tight, translucent grain holds this fineness — softer stones chip at the string. At our Chandpole Bazaar workshop, PLPS artisans have carved Saraswati since 1950, in the tradition founded by Shilp Guru Late Pandit Lallu Prasad Sharma (Presidential Award, 1991).
Traditionally, Saraswati is seated in Padmasana on a white lotus, her four hands carrying the gifts she bestows: the veena in the two forward hands, a palm-leaf pustaka in the upper left, and a sphatik rosary in the upper right; a kamandalu of sacred water rests nearby. A hamsa — sometimes a peacock — is her vahana at the base. Vastu places her in the Ishaan (north-east) corner of a study room or library, facing east so the first light of dawn falls on the book she holds.

Saraswati's iconography is one of the few in Sanatan Dharma where every element — saree, lotus, hamsa, skin, veena body — is described in scripture as pure white, symbolising vidya untouched by colour or bias. Casting or painting her in a coloured marble (Bhainslana golden, green, black) breaks that iconographic rule and, traditionally, is considered inauspicious for a knowledge deity. Makrana white is the authentic choice; Vietnam white is an acceptable lower-cost alternative. Any decoration should be limited to gold accents on ornaments and never applied to her skin, saree or lotus seat.
For a student's personal study table or a home study-room shelf, an 8 to 12 inch Saraswati murti is the most balanced choice — large enough for daily darshan before revision, small enough not to crowd books and stationery. For a family library or a shared study space, 15 to 18 inches works well on a wall-mounted shelf. Music schools, coaching institutes and university libraries usually commission 2 to 4 foot statues on a low pedestal. Whatever the size, keep the murti at chest height when seated, so her gaze meets you as you study.
Vasant Panchami — celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in Magha (late January to early February) — is the most auspicious day to install or renew a Saraswati murti, as it is regarded as her birth anniversary and marks the arrival of spring. Many families and institutions perform Pran Pratishtha and the child's first akshar-abhyas (writing initiation) on this day. If you cannot wait for Vasant Panchami, any Thursday morning or the start of a new academic session is also considered spiritually appropriate for installation.
Each of Saraswati's four hands holds a specific gift she bestows on the seeker. The veena in her two forward hands represents nada-brahma — creative expression and the harmony of arts and music. The palm-leaf pustaka in her upper left hand stands for the Vedas and scriptural knowledge that must be studied, not merely inherited. The sphatik-mala (crystal rosary) in her upper right hand signifies japa, meditative discipline and the quiet repetition that turns information into wisdom. The kamandalu of sacred water beside her holds amrit — the nectar of true understanding.
Saraswati's veena strings and hamsa feathers are the finest carved elements on the statue and need gentle handling. Dust only with a soft dry brush — a natural squirrel-hair or fine sable artist brush works better than cloth, which can catch on a string. For a weekly clean, use a barely damp cotton bud along the veena frets and swan wing tips. Never use soap, marble cleaner or lemon; the acid dulls Makrana and can weaken hairline detail. Avoid lifting the murti by the veena — always cradle the lotus base with both hands.
A marble Saraswati is one of the most meaningful gifts for an academic milestone — Class 10 or 12 board results, university convocation, a doctoral defence, a first teaching position, a music-school diploma, or a child's akshar-abhyas at age three. For personal graduation gifts, an 8 to 10 inch murti with a Devanagari dedication engraved along the lotus base — the recipient's name and the date — carries deep sentimental weight. For an institution's inauguration, a 2 to 3 foot statue is customary. Order 45 to 60 days ahead of the ceremony to allow carving and insured delivery.
