Lord Shiva stands apart from every deity in the Hindu pantheon — at once the withdrawn ascetic on Mount Kailash and the householder god of Parvati, Ganesha and Kartikeya. As Adi Yogi, the first teacher of yoga, his most beloved form for family shrines is the meditative Dhyana Shiva, seated in padmasana with hands resting in his lap. White marble suits this iconography with rare fidelity: its luminous surface echoes the sacred ash (vibhuti) Shiva wears, and its stillness mirrors his own. The meditative Shiv Ji statue remains the most requested Shiva form we carve at PLPS.
At our Chandpole Bazaar workshop, every Shiv Ji murti is shaped entirely by hand — no machine turning, no mould. Our Shilpis begin with Shila Pariksha to confirm the block is free of veins that would fracture during the delicate carving of the jatas (matted locks) and the coiled Vasuki around Shiva's neck. Rekhankan marks the padmasana proportions, then months of Chikni polishing bring out the meditative calm. Dense Makrana marble is preferred for the classic serene white Shiva; Vietnam White suits softer, more detailed faces; and Bhainslana lends a warm golden hue for devotees who prefer a Bholenath in earthen tones.
Authenticity in a Shiv Ji statue lies in its iconography. A correctly carved murti carries Ganga flowing through the jatas, the crescent moon (Chandra) resting on the crown, the third eye (Trinetra) on the forehead, Rudraksha malas across the chest, Vasuki the serpent draped around the neck, and the trishul with damaru either held or resting alongside. For Vastu, Shiv Ji is best placed in the North-East (Ishaan) corner of the home, ideally facing East or North — never inside the bedroom, and always on an elevated chowki or pedestal, never on the floor.
Sizes range from a 6-inch travel murti to 7-foot temple installations, with 12-inch to 24-inch pieces most popular for home mandirs. Gold leaf (Swarna Karya) can be applied to the trishul, damaru and crescent moon; mineral pigments bring the Vasuki serpent and the jatas to subtle life. A sculpted Kailash-mountain base is a favourite custom addition for larger installations.

A Shiv Ji statue is a sculpted anthropomorphic form of Lord Shiva — depicting him seated in meditation, standing as Bholenath, or as Ashutosh with his attributes visible. A Shivling is the aniconic, formless representation of Shiva, symbolising the infinite cosmic pillar of consciousness. Ritually both are worshipped, but Shivlings receive abhishekam (continuous water pouring) whereas anthropomorphic Shiv Ji statues are typically offered flowers, bilva leaves and aarti. Most family mandirs at PLPS request the meditative Shiv Ji statue as the darshan-focused central deity, sometimes alongside a smaller Shivling.
For most Indian home mandirs, a 12-inch to 24-inch Shiv Ji statue is the ideal range — large enough to convey the iconographic detail (jatas, crescent moon, Vasuki, trishul) without overpowering the shrine or forcing the deity's face above eye level while seated in worship. If your mandir has depth, an 18-inch meditative Shiva on a small Kailash pedestal reads beautifully. For dedicated puja rooms or family temple halls, 30 inches and above is appropriate. Below 9 inches, the fine detailing on the jatas and serpent becomes hard to appreciate.
Vastu Shastra places Lord Shiva in the North-East (Ishaan) corner of the home — the zone of divinity, clarity and moksha. The statue should face East or North so devotees performing puja face West or South respectively. Always elevate the murti on a chowki, pedestal or shelf; never place it directly on the floor. Avoid the bedroom (Shiva's energy is intense and ascetic, not domestic), walls shared with bathrooms, spaces under staircases, and the kitchen. A clean, well-lit puja room or a quiet living-room corner is ideal.
Makrana marble is the traditional first choice for Shiv Ji: its dense grain holds a fine polish for decades, and its cool white finish mirrors Shiva's vibhuti-ash imagery beautifully. Vietnam White is a slightly softer alternative that carves crisper facial features and finer jatas, making it well suited to smaller detailed murtis. Bhainslana marble carries a warm golden undertone — chosen by devotees who want a Bholenath in earthen, sun-touched tones rather than pure white. Hand-carved Shiv Ji statues carry unmistakable signs of human craftsmanship: subtly asymmetric jatas that flow with organic irregularity, individually chiselled Rudraksha beads in the mala, a serpent whose scales taper by hand rather than repeat identically, and a face where the meditative expression is unique to that piece. Machine-cut work looks mechanically uniform, especially in the matted locks and serpent coil. Every PLPS Shiv Ji statue is chiselled entirely by hand across 30 to 90 days by our fourth-generation Shilpis — no CNC, no moulding, no shortcuts. The most fragile zones on a Shiv Ji statue are the deep undercuts of the jatas, the coiled Vasuki, and the raised trishul or damaru. Dust weekly with a soft, dry natural-hair brush (a shaving brush works well) — never a wet cloth on these zones, as trapped moisture in undercuts encourages darkening. Wipe the smooth body with a barely damp muslin cloth and dry immediately. Avoid citrus, vinegar and acidic cleaners — they etch marble permanently. If gold leaf (Swarna Karya) has been applied, dust only, never wipe. PLPS ships every statue with a care card.
